2006 Arctic Winter Games Notes

Kivalliq Region

14 and Under Girls'

 Champions

Way to go! What a great year my 14 and under girls have had. We have been working up to this point for 2 years and all of their hard work and dedication has paid off. First of all we won the 14 and Under Girls Regional Championships in Rankin Inlet in November. We had a great tournament and we won every game by a good margin. The gold medal game score was Coral 8 Rankin 1. Mavis was named MVP of the tournament and our goalie (Kaylie) allowed only 5 goals the entire tournament. All 8 girls were named to Team Kivalliq to represent our region at Territorials in December. Kathleen Netser and Deanna Ell were also named to Team Kivalliq from the 16 and under division. Great work girls!

Wow! What a time we had in Iqaluit. Our Coral Harbour Soccer Girls showed Nunavut just how strong players from our small community can be against our capital city Iqaluit. Competition was tough and the fans were loud. The memories of such an event will last these girls a life time. Thanks for the great welcome home at the airport. It was a great surprise!

At right are the girls who competed as Team Kivalliq at Territorials this year in Iqaluit.

Wow! What a great time we had in Alaska! My girls won the bronze ulu (the first medal ever won for Nunavut Soccer) and boy did we work for it. First we had to make it to the playoffs. The gym was packed all day long with spectators watching soccer and were they ever loud. Alaska and Northern Alberta were very strong teams (Alaska won three of the five divisions at the games). We had a hard time getting it together at first as some players were not used to the surroundings, fans, soccer court and the level of competition. Each game we played got better and better. We also had a lot of team meetings. By the time the medal rounds game we were back on top of our game.

After a week of intensive soccer games, we beat the Yukon 4-3 to make it to the playoffs. Next we had the opportunity to make history in Nunavut. We would be taking on the NWT for the bronze medal. My girls and I were very excited about the possibility of being the first Team Nunavut to ever win a medal at the AWG’s. After a long and intensive game we beat the NWT 2-1. The fans went wild as did all of our Nunavut supporters as we had just made history in Nunavut and captured the bronze ulu. I was so proud of my girls! We practiced long and hard to get to the AWG’s and to win the first ever ulu for Nunavut was the icing on the cake. They (and I) will cherish these memories for a lifetime.

Medal Presentations

Alaska is a beautiful state and we were busy from the time we got up in the morning until bedtime. Other than playing soccer every day my girls went shopping, dancing, swimming, watched other sports, surfed the net, called family, took lots of pictures, hung out with new and old friends and toured the town. The people were very friendly which made out time away from home go buy quickly. There were many sad faces when it was time to leave Alaska as many new friends had been made and a great experience was drawing to a close. This years AWG’s was an experience my girls will never forget!
